HADRIAN'S WALL AND THE BORDERS  with Roman forts and fantastic walking.

HOLY ISLAND OF LINDISFARNE is a tidal island off the north-sea coast linked to the mainland by a causeway which is covered by the tide twice a day.  St. Aidan founded the Lindisfarne Monastery in 635 and the Lindisfarne Gospels, a 7th Century Illuminated  Latin Manuscript, now in the British Museum, was written here.  Don’t forget to check the tide times before going!

FARNE ISLANDS (NT). If you don’t mind an often-choppy boat ride, The Farne Islands are home to vast sea-bird colonies and grey seals, but are probably most famous for the large numbers of adorable burrowing puffins.

ALNWICK CASTLE AND GARDENS is home to the Duke & Duchess of Northumberland and the setting for Harry Potter's Hogwarts - Learn to ride a broomstick!

NEWCASTLE is a vibrant city with recently developed waterfront (Sage Theatre and Baltic Art Gallery). Nearby WYLAM was the birthplace of railway pioneer George Stephenson.

BEAMISH OPEN-AIR MUSEUM reconstructed streets and houses of the area from a bygone age.
 
DURHAM - Magnificent Norman Cathedral (resting place of St Cuthbert) and University Town. Very good home-made lunches and snacks in the Cathedral crypt, also excellent book / gift shop. Historic Crook House and beautiful gardens are well worth a visit on a sunny day.

BARNARD CASTLE Bowes Museum with exceptional paintings by Canaletto and others, beautiful porcelain and unique Silver Swan automaton.

LEYBURN - Tennants Auction House with a good home-cooking cafe is a good place for a pit-stop when in the Dales. Leyburn Food Festival in the spring. Sandpiper restaurant in Leyburn itself serves a good meal and has a nice atmosphere.

MASHAM is home to the Black Sheep Brewery.

MIDDLEHAM - Many famous race horse trainers are based here. An interesting pub serving good food is the Blue Lion at East Witton.

HARROGATE is a beautiful Spa town with good shops and  restaurants. Garden enthusiasts should visit RHS Harlow Carr. Harrogate Spring Flower Show April, Autumn Flower Show September. Famous Betty's Tearooms (Centre of town and Harlow Carr).

Near RIPON, Newby Hall is an 18th Century Grade I country house beside the River Ure and the gardens are also stunning, especially when the Cornus are in bloom.  Their very long Herbaceous Borders are famous.  There is a little train and large Children’s Play Area, and a very nice restaurant with Garden Terrace.

FOUNTAINS ABBEY AND STUDLEY ROYAL WATER GARDENS (NT) is a World Heritage Site with the vast Cistercian Abbey, an Elizabethan Hall and Gothic church.

LIGHTWATER VALLEY THEME PARK near RIPON with the longest rollercoaster in Europe.

YORK is a beautiful city at all times of the year with Roman, Viking and Medieval remains throughout the city. Visit the world-famous York Minster or walk the city walls. Fairfax House, a Georgian Townhouse, Clifford's Tower and York Castle Museum are all very interesting. The National Railway Museum is a fascinating slice of railway history. Two wonderful Betty's Tearooms, usually less of a queue at Little Betty's in Stonegate.
