OUT & ABOUT

OUT AND ABOUT

Ingleby Manor is perfectly placed for gentle walking or for the long-distance Lyke Wake Walk, Cleveland Way and Coast to Coast Walk. A short walk across a couple of fields and a climb along the old drovers' road to Turkey Nab brings you into the middle of the largest expanse of heather-covered moorland in England, which is in full bloom in August / September, the colour and scent indescribable, a sea of shimmering purple stretching for miles to the horizon. The beekeepers bring their hives to the moors and heather honey can be found in local shops and at the little agricultural shows which are held in the valleys below.

The magnificent North Yorkshire coast with its towering cliffs, sheltered sandy coves and picturesque old fishing villages such as Scarborough, Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay are less than an hour away. Surfboard at Saltburn, abseil, canoe and orienteer nearby, and “Go Ape” or join a Badger Watch in Dalby Forest, designated a “Dark Sky” area. In your property, you will find the “Bible” of Guest Information and we have put together some researched walks, suggested itineraries and some relatively unknown places for coffee etc. en route, such as The Mouseman café, hidden away in the hills at Kilburn, all home cooking and delicious.

Further afield, the historic cathedral cities of York and Durham, the elegant Spa town of Harrogate and lively Newcastle are an hour’s drive, and this part of North Yorkshire is rich in ancient abbeys, grand houses like Castle Howard, and exceptionally lovely gardens like Newby Hall, RHS Harlow Carr and Scampston, designed by Piet Oudolf.

We hope the information in this section will help you make the most of your holiday, whatever your ages and interests.  We have broken it down into three areas :
from Hadrian’s Wall in the north to Leeds in the south, and from east coast to west coast.

“The Manor is very well located for day trips on the moors, to the coast (Whitby was delightful on a sunny winter's day) and to Durham. We hope to return and we happily recommend Ingleby Manor."
